Here is my New Year 2007 posting.

Ok. So, I’m going to do it. My new year resolutions. Committing them to blog will give me the ability to review them periodically rather than “conveniently” forgetting them. In no special order.

    1. Finish the MS degree program. (Only one course remaining. I’ve procrastinated long enough!) ¡Result: Done! :D
    2. Finish the tool shed. Result: Not Done :(
    3. Finish the bookcase in the sun room/study. Result: Not Done :(
    4. Begin remodeling my home office. Result: Not Done :(
    5. Use Linux as my primary OS. Result: Partially there :)
    6. Refine photography skills. Result: Ongoing :|
    7. Work on and strengthen relationships. Result: Still working at it :|
    8. Be serious and intentional about my faith. Result: Still working at it :|

I’ll try to do a quarterly update Result: Not Done :(

    Well…not so good.

  • WordPress 2.7

I like the new admin interface a lot. I had been working on Drupal exclusively for the past several months. I decided to move this blog back to WP just as 2.7 was being released. I have always found releases for WordPress are usually solid so I didn’t bother to read up on it before installing 2.7. And I was not disappointed!

I was surprised at the extent to which the admin interface was reworked. But after about 2 days of getting to know my way around I realize although it is much more than I expected it is also much more than I had hoped for. For me, this interface is intuitive which results in easier navigation. I especially like the quickpress feature. I am sure I will discover more but I like what I see so far.

Finally. I need to pay attention to this blog much more than I have in the past. I have been experimenting a lot and not adding much content. This year I will concentrate on the content.

I will be updating the theme. I like my first theme “musyoka” so I plan to modify K2 to look like “musyoka” with respect to colors and font style.

  • Back to WordPress and Happy!

Well I am so glad I did not blow away my wordpress site when I migrated to Drupal. Back in July I decided to migrate this site to Drupal and did so and lived with it for the past several months. But I have drawn the conclusion that for what I want out of this particular site, WordPress is the best CMS for me. I do have a nice Drupal install at xonxor.com. But this site will remain a WordPress site forever!!! (I think…)

  • The Historic 2008 Presidential Election

    [October 16, 2008]
Regardless who wins this will be an historic election. However, I am very disappointed with some of the campaign strategies on both sides of the isle.

Negative campaigning is very distasteful. It is like playing the dozens If you don’t know the dozens you are probably not black. But it is when you dis your opponent through put-downs of their character, their person or their family. Take one little thing, pull it out of context, amplify it to suit your own needs and then talk about it in a disrespectful tone. Written out like that it doesn’t sound so good. Listening to that stuff (from both sides) either deceives you into believing a partial truth or in some cases a complete lie; or it seems so blatant that you wonder how anyone can believe it. And, suffice to say that what people believe is very much influenced by what they are told.

    [November 4 2008]
I am so amazed at this election. Never would I have believed that a black man would have the potential to be elected to the highest office in the country where I was born. The country where my ancestors had few individual rights. The country that is my home even though there were times it felt inhospitable. I am so happy about this I can hardly contain myself!

  • Migration is Complete

I just finished the migration to Drupal. Now I can concentrate on learning and enhancing Drupal on this site. I am amazed with how powerful Drupal is. So many modules have been created it is very difficult for someone new to get a handle on which modules should be used in a basic site. I understand many modules depend on the purpose of the site but some (like cck) should be included in any site.

I have been working on migrating trasna.net from WordPress to Drupal. I am as enthusiastic about WordPress as I have ever been. But I really like the flexibility Drupal offers and the fact that I am not limited to simple blogging. It is a very well developed CMS and a well supported platform.

I decided to migrate the hard way…completely manually. I am about 2/3 the way through the migration as of the date of this post. In many ways it is unfortunate that I started with version 6. Unfortunate because many of the modules I need are not yet available in the 6.x series. All of the links are there and most of thr blog articles have been migrated. I am building the site on xonxor.com. Once everything has been entered I will move it all back to trasna.net as a Drupal managed site.

Edith Lefel is one of my all time favorite artists. This song is from the aptly named CD “La Voix Du Zouk! To have lost such a talent at such an early age is a shame.

  • Bathroom Remodel

We recently remodeled our first floor 1/2 bath. The decor was definitely 1960s to late 1970s vintage. It had black tile half way up the wall, and black linoleum. The one nice feature and one reason we waited so long to update the bathroom is this mural which was hand painted on the wall.

On the side of the Trolley it says Wolf & Warren Sts to South Ave. Anyone familiar with Syracuse, NY recognizes those street names immediately. It is painted directly on the wall so unfortunately it was not possible to save the painting.
